Frequently Asked Questions

What is AVIF?
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format derived from the AV1 video codec. It achieves 50% smaller file sizes than JPEG at equivalent quality, but requires recent software to open.
Will the conversion reduce quality?
We convert at a very high JPEG quality setting (95+) to preserve as much detail as possible. The main trade-off is a slightly larger file size compared to the original AVIF.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser. Your photos never leave your device.
Why can't I open my AVIF file in Windows?
Windows 10 and 11 require the AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store to display AVIF thumbnails and open AVIF files in Photos. If you don't want to install it, converting to JPG is the easiest solution.
